How to Read Your Syringe

   Check the syringe capacity

   Look at the packaging or the barrel of the syringe. U-100 insulin syringes come in three sizes: 0.3 mL (30 units), 0.5 mL (50 units), and 1 mL (100 units). The total capacity is printed on the barrel.

   Identify the unit scale

   On 0.3 mL and 0.5 mL syringes, every tick mark equals 1 unit. On a 1 mL syringe, every tick mark equals 2 units. This is the single most important thing to verify before drawing medication.

   Draw medication to the correct line

   Pull the plunger until the top of the rubber stopper (the flat edge closest to the needle) is aligned with your target tick mark. Do not read from the rounded dome of the stopper or from the bottom edge.

   Hold syringe at eye level to check

   Parallax error can cause misreading. Hold the syringe horizontally at eye level with the tick marks facing you. Confirm the stopper edge aligns precisely with the target line.

   Tap to remove air bubbles before reading

   With the needle pointing up, flick the barrel gently to move air bubbles to the top, then push the plunger slightly to expel the air. Re-check your dose measurement after removing bubbles, as the volume may have changed.
